Dominican Republic Basic Facts

The Country - The Dominican Republic is part of the Caribbean archipelago. Its territory covers more than 2/3 of the island of Hispaniola. The Atlantic Ocean surrounds the northern part of the island, Puerto Rico is located to the east, the Caribbean Sea is situated on the southern part of the island while Haiti lies to the west.

General Information - The country's total territory is 48, 442 square kilometers and its population has surpassed the eight million mark. The capital city is Santo Domingo, with a population of two million inhabitants.

Languages spoken - Spanish is the official language of the Dominican Republic, although English is commonly spoken.

Climate - Tropical. Annual temperatures average 81° F (26.2° C) AREA CODE - The country's area code is 809

Currency - The official currency is the Peso. The dollar exchange rate varies according to the rate set by the country's Central Bank. All local banks post the daily exchange rate on their bulletin boards. Most major credit cards are accepted in most local commercial establishments.

Driving - Driving is done on the right-hand side of the road. A valid driver's license can be used in the Dominican Republic.

Electriciy - 110 -120 volts, 60 Hz

Liquor laws - in the Dominican Republic, the legal drinking age is 18

Taxes - There's a consumer tax of 12% Hotels charge a 22 % tax, distributed as follows: 10% for the legal tip and 12% consumer tax.

Tipping - 10% is recommended.

Time The Dominican Republic is Eastern Standard Time all year round. From October to April the country is one hour ahead (+1) from EST.
